People shrug.

Maybe they even congratulate him.

An accomplished older woman dates a younger man?

Suddenly everybody has a committee meeting.

Why?

Because apparently women are supposed to age gracefully while men are allowed to age expensively.

Simone isn't asking permission.

And that's what makes the judgment uncomfortable.

She's not pretending Luca is her age.

She's not pretending the age difference doesn't exist.

She's simply refusing to believe that the difference automatically makes their relationship invalid.

Women have been told for generations that their desirability has an expiration date.

Meanwhile, men get “distinguished.”

Interesting.

Very interesting.

Luca doesn't see Simone as an older version of someone else.

He sees her experience as part of what makes her attractive.

Her confidence isn't something he has to tolerate.

It's part of the appeal.

Her independence isn't intimidating.

It's intriguing.

And her life experience doesn't make her less sensual.

It makes her more interesting.

Maybe that's the conversation we should actually be having.

Not:

“How old is she?”

But:

“How does he treat her?”

Not:

“What does she see in him?”

But:

“Do they make each other better?”

Because love doesn't need to pass a demographic audit.

Sometimes two people simply meet.

The chemistry hits.

And everybody else needs to sit down.
