The Government Can Read Her Mind, but It Still Cannot Handle Her Mouth

Future governments have access to neural scans, predictive behavior systems, biometric surveillance, artificial-intelligence soldiers, and technology capable of rewriting human consciousness.

Very impressive.

Unfortunately, none of it prepared them for Nysera’s mouth.

Nysera lives in a world where thoughts can become evidence. The Triune Authority monitors behavior, relationships, biological responses, and anything else it can package under the phrase “public safety.”

The Atlantean Union specializes in luxury authoritarianism.

The Pacific Shogunate turns surveillance into an art form.

The Solari Collective combines spiritual science with political resistance.

Everybody has advanced technology.

Nobody has patience for Nysera asking follow-up questions.

That is why she is dangerous.

Nysera understands systems. She is a neural engineer, not a frightened civilian who can be distracted by a polished presentation and a complimentary genetic upgrade.

When officials tell her the new system protects citizens, she asks who protects citizens from the system.

When they say neural monitoring prevents violence, she asks whether dissent has conveniently been reclassified as violence.

When Elias attempts diplomacy, she watches his jaw tighten and says, “You speak beautifully for a hostage.”

The man nearly swallows his expensive government-issued dignity.

Ren stands nearby pretending he did not hear it.

Zayan absolutely heard it and is trying not to laugh.

That is the energy.

Nysera’s humor is not decoration. It is resistance.

Authoritarian systems depend on reverence. They need people to believe officials are untouchable, technology is infallible, and rebellion is impossible.

Sarcasm punctures the fantasy.

A government official announces, “The system has achieved ninety-nine percent behavioral accuracy.”

Nysera replies, “Wonderful. Maybe it can predict when you’ll stop lying.”

Security moves closer.

Ren’s hand shifts toward his weapon.

Zayan whispers, “I’m beginning to understand the arson concerns.”

The attraction surrounding Nysera grows because each man responds differently to her refusal to submit.

Elias is fascinated.

Ren becomes protective.

Zayan becomes entertained.

Her enemies become obsessed with silencing her.

Bad plan.

Nysera has already lost too much to become cooperative for the sake of comfort. She will ask the questions nobody wants answered. She will expose the gaps. She will flirt at inappropriate moments and insult authority while dressed like the main event.

The government may be inside everyone’s mind.

Nysera is about to live rent-free inside theirs.
